Psalms XXIII, 4]...disasters came thick on me: I was forced to pass through the valley of the shadow of death. (Ch. Brontë, ‘Jane Eyre’, ch. XXXVII) —...на меня обрушились несчастья. Я был на волосок от смерти.
In 1930, the United States of America went down into the Valley of the Shadows and looked Hell in the face. (W. Du Bois, ‘Mansart Builds a School’, ch. XIX) — В 1930 году над Америкой сгустились черные тучи и она оказалась в преддверье ада.

When one has walked in the valley of the shadow of death, and come out of it into the sunshine - then, mon cher, it is a new life that begins... (A. Christie, ‘Sad Cypress’, part III, ch.
